Who We Are
A Unique Church
We Emphasize Grace, not Judgement
City on a Hill acknowledges that God’s grace and love is for all people and that his grace and love proceeds and takes precedence over all things. For many, their understanding of the church, even their understanding of God, begins with guilt and sin, judgment and punishment, laws and rules, condemnation and disappointment. This understanding of where the church begins and even where God begins (though very popular today) is simply not where City on a Hill is in its understanding of the church, God and the Bible. God himself, and hence the church, does and must begin with grace, love, acceptance, and mercy. City on a Hill starts there, not with guilt and sin, judgment and punishment, laws and rules, or condemnation and disappointment, simply with grace and love.
We Emphasize God’s Work not Our Own
Second, City on a Hill is about “becoming” and not “doing.” We know all too well that none of us has “arrived.” That none of us will even if we “do” works that are good. That ultimately we are all in the same place in life and we need what God has to offer, namely grace and love. This is why we aren’t a church that feels we need to do anything to earn God’s favor, his grace and love, but we are simply becoming what he wants us to become because of what He is doing in our lives.
We Emphasize Relevance not Tradition
City on a Hill believes that God and his message are important for and apply to life today. That is, God is modern, contemporary, up to date. So, City on a Hill communicates God through worship, teaching, messages, and programs that are modern, contemporary, and up to date. You won’t find much, if any, tradition at City on a Hill.
We Emphasize People, not Programs or Property
City on a Hill is a church of people not a building, place, or institution. Simply said, City on a Hill is only a church because of the people. The people are the church. Indeed then, City on a Hill is a Christian church but a unique one at that, a church that focuses on people and relationships.
We Emphasize Small Groups not Corporate Gatherings
City on a Hill values smaller groups over larger more corporate gatherings. Small groups are the means by which we begin to relate to others and relate to God. City on a Hill has not set out to be, nor envisions itself as, a large corporate church. City on a Hill is different. We are about community, community that is found predominately in small groups of people that are all struggling in relationships and seeking to grow in them at the same time.
